Jochen Gerner - Dogs
Jochen Garner's work Dogs is a collection of 200 dog portraits created between 2021 and 2022 as part of a graphic experiment. This series represents his attempt to explore a broader range of animal expression following his studies of birds, portraying the diversity of dogs in a manner that is both humorous and moving.
Garner utilized small gridded or ruled notebooks from China and India, drawing the uniquely expressive forms of dogs with felt-tip pens filled with pigment ink. Each drawing incorporates grids, lines, and colors to convey texture and movement. Wavy lines, lattices, diamond shapes, and wave patterns imbue the dogs' fur with a sense of dynamism, reflecting an approach that is simple yet innovative.
This work serves as a new type of animal encyclopedia that combines elements of illustration and graphic design, once again showcasing Garner's distinctive powers of observation and creativity.
